Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday replaced veteran BJP legislator and Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo HeK with another BJP legislator, Sanbor Shullai who will be sworn in as minister.
This is the second reshuffle in his Council of Ministers by Sangma since he was sworn in as Chief Minister on March 9, 2018.
Shullai, the BJP legislator from the South Shillong constituency and former Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker, will be sworn in this evening by Governor Satya Pal Malik as minister.
Sources said that the reshuffle was done based on a letter sent by Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie to the Chief Minister citing that the legislator had an agreement to share the ministership for two and half years following the formation of the National People’s Party
-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
Last year, Shullai had in fact agreed with Hek that he would not become the minister and he would allow Hek to continue as minister till the end of the term.
The seven-party MDA coalition government comprises the NPP (20), the UDP (9), the People’s Democratic Front (4), the BJP and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (two each), the Nationalist Congress Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (one each) beside an Independent.
The opposition Congress has 17 members in the 60- member Meghalaya assembly, which currently has an effective strength of 58 due to the passing away of two Congress legislators earlier this year.
