COVID-19 cases on upsurge in Meghalaya

Shillong: The daily COVID-19 count in Meghalaya is on an upsurge again after a few days of decline with eight deaths increasing the fatality figure to 939 and 507 new cases adding up to 4080 active cases on Saturday, even as 585 more recoveries from the viral infection surged the number of recovered cases to 51981 in the state, which has registered 57000 confirmed cases so far.
The state government has announced several containment measures to be effective across the state from July 19 with an aim to check the spread of the virus, especially in the rural areas.
“The deaths due to Covid-19 complications recorded on Saturday included three in East Khasi Hills district, two in West Garo Hills district and one each in West Khasi Hills district, East Garo Hills district and East Jaintia Hills district,” Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said.
He said the new COVID-19 cases detected today were 195 in East Khasi Hills district, 126 in West Garo Hills district, 73 in Ri-Bhoi district, 41 in West Jaintia Hills district, 17 in North Garo Hills district, 16 in South West Khasi Hills district, 11 in East Garo Hills district, 10 in West Khasi Hills district, seven in South Garo Hills district, six in East Jaintia Hills district and five cases in South West Garo Hills district.
With 1,137 active positive cases and 680 fatalities, the East Khasi Hills, which includes state capital Shillong, is the most affected district, followed by West Garo Hills district with 875 active cases, Ri-Bhoi district with 617 active cases and West Jaintia Hills district with 500 active cases, while the other seven districts have less than 300 active cases each.
Till Saturday , 7,72,981 persons have been tested for COVID-19 across the state, of whom 7,15,981 were tested negative for the virus, as per data released by the National Health Mission, Meghalaya.
On the other hand, 31,456 health care workers received the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 and 20,812 received the second dose, 97,061 front-line workers got the first jab and 28,915 took the second shot, 6,40,433 persons from among the general public were inoculated with the first dose and 6,6,769 citizens were fully vaccinated with the second dose across the state as on date, as per official bulletin.
