Assam: Assam Rifles conducted a solemn wreath laying ceremony in Haflong, Dima Hasao district, Assam, to honour the supreme sacrifice of Colonel TS Mahil, SM (P) and Lance Naik Kushal Singh, SM (P), who displayed unwavering courage during counter-insurgency operations.
On 24 July 1994, Colonel TS Mahil, along with his escort, departed camp at 1050 hours for intelligence tasks in Lodhi Basti, Dima Hasao district. During the mission, he visited the church and met the village chief, halting at his house. While returning, NSCN terrorists ambushed their vehicle near a speed breaker on the outskirts of the village. Disregarding personal safety, both bravehearts fought the insurgents despite facing overwhelming odds. Lance Naik Kushal Singh sustained a fatal bullet injury to his neck, losing his life on the spot. Colonel TS Mahil sustained severe bullet injuries and was evacuated to a civil hospital by the second escort, where he succumbed to excessive blood loss.
In recognition of their gallantry, both were awarded the Sena Medal (Posthumously). The commemoration commenced with wreath laying by senior officials, who paid homage and exhorted all ranks by recounting their story to inspire pride, honour and dedication. More than 120 personnel including senior officials of Assam Rifles paid tribute by laying wreaths and honouring the martyrs with a Guard of Honour.
