Post poll violence continues in Manipur, two nabbed

Imphal: Two persons were nabbed on Sunday by Manipur police and Assam Rifles for allegedly resorting to firing while celebrating the victory of a candidate at Saitu constituency, Kangpokpi district.

Police fired tear gas shells on Monday at Kshetrigao, Imphal East to disperse protesters who were protesting arrests made for violence after the elections.

Police said on March 10 information was received that some unknown persons suspected to be cadres of Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) and KRA (V) resorted to indiscriminate firing using firearms at Lhungtin village near T. Gamnom Designated camp during a victory procession to celebrate the winning of 46-Saikul (ST) AC seat by a woman candidate Kimneo Hangshing.

In the follow-up action, Saikul P.S and 22 AR arrested David Hangshing and Seikhochon Hangshing, both KRA cadres on Sunday. Meanwhile, a large number of people protested the arrest of some people at Kshetrigao who were celebrating the victory of JD(U) candidate Nurul.

There was a standoff between protestors and police and to disperse the crowd, tear gas shells were fired.
