Thoubal: The 80th Independence Day was celebrated today, at District Headquarter Thoubal. The main function was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Complex, Thoubal.
Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal, Yumnam Robita, IAS, hoisted the National Flag and took the salute of the march-past contingents led by Parade Commander Reema Haobam, MPS.
A total of 24 contingents, comprising personnel from the Police, NCC, school students, cultural troupes and Fire Service, participated in the ceremonial march-past, adding solemnity and patriotic fervour to the 80th Independence Day celebration in the district.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day of the nation, the Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal, paid profound respect and expressed gratitude to the brave freedom fighters whose supreme sacrifices secured the priceless gift of freedom for the country. She said their courage, patriotism and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire generations of Indians.
The Deputy Commissioner said that this year’s celebration beautifully bridges India’s rich heritage with its aspirations for the future through the two core themes, “150 Years of Vande Mataram” and “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat @ 2047.” While the former honours the nation’s iconic patriotic song, the latter underscores the vital role of youth in leading the country in science, innovation and entrepreneurship towards the goal of a developed India by 2047.
On the solemn and joyous occasion, she called upon everyone to reaffirm their collective resolve to uphold the ideals enshrined in the Constitution and work together towards building a developed, inclusive, prosperous and self-reliant India.
Highlighting the achievements of Thoubal District during the past year, the Deputy Commissioner said that the district has demonstrated resilience, dedicated public service and meaningful progress despite numerous challenges. She credited the collective efforts of government departments, security forces, elected representatives, civil society organisations and, above all, the resilient people of Thoubal for the progress achieved.
Jal Jeevan Mission
Emphasising the importance of access to clean drinking water, the Deputy Commissioner said that safe drinking water is fundamental to human dignity and public health. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Thoubal District has made significant progress. Out of 35 Jal Jeevan Mission projects, 32 have been completed and made operational, while 37,530 rural households have been provided with Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs).
As a result, the district has achieved 88.72 per cent household tap-water coverage, bringing safe and reliable drinking water closer to families across rural areas. She said the achievement reflects the administration’s commitment to improving rural quality of life and public health.
Agriculture and Horticulture
Agriculture continues to remain the backbone of Thoubal District’s economy. During the year, the Agriculture Department successfully implemented several flagship schemes aimed at promoting scientific farming, improving irrigation, increasing productivity, strengthening food security and enhancing farmers’ incomes.
The Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation has also actively promoted crop diversification and high-value agriculture. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Cluster Development Programme for Makhana, under which farmers have received assistance for pond development, adoption of scientific cultivation techniques and capacity building. These initiatives are creating sustainable livelihood opportunities and opening new avenues for rural prosperity.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry continued its efforts to strengthen livestock health and productivity through various interventions, including implementation of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme, doorstep veterinary services through Mobile Veterinary Units, accessible through the toll-free number 1962, and genetic improvement of indigenous cattle under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission through Artificial Insemination.
The Deputy Commissioner said these interventions are contributing significantly to improving farmers’ incomes, livestock productivity and nutritional security.
Youth and Sports
Highlighting the importance of youth in nation-building, the Deputy Commissioner said that the youth are the greatest strength of the nation. The District Administration continues to encourage sports, youth leadership, physical fitness and constructive community participation to enable young people to become responsible citizens and future leaders of the country.
Law and Order and Public Safety
The Deputy Commissioner stated that peace and security remain the foundation of development and that maintaining law and order continues to be the highest priority.
During the year, 583 criminal cases were disposed of, including 487 Final Reports and 96 Charge Sheets, reflecting efficient investigation and efforts towards speedy justice.
She further informed that 148 illegal firearms and 5,899 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the year. These recoveries, he said, have contributed significantly to enhancing public safety and restoring normalcy in the district.
Anti-Narcotics Measures
Drug abuse continues to pose a serious threat to the youth and society. In line with the Government’s vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat, Thoubal Police intensified anti-narcotics operations across the district, resulting in significant action against drug-trafficking networks.
The Deputy Commissioner said that every seizure represents a step towards protecting young lives from addiction and safeguarding communities from drug-related crime. He reaffirmed that the fight against drugs would continue with greater determination.
Traffic Management
During the year, 2,689 traffic challans were issued, with penalties amounting to more than ₹71.65 lakh imposed. A substantial number of challans were also disposed of, contributing to improved compliance with traffic regulations and promoting safer roads across the district.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised that the progress celebrated today is not the achievement of any single department or individual. It is the result of the tireless efforts of government officials, police personnel, armed forces, elected representatives, frontline workers, development partners, civil society organisations and every citizen of Thoubal District.
She expressed her sincere appreciation to all stakeholders for their dedication, professionalism and selfless service towards the district.
Concluding his address, the Deputy Commissioner called upon the people to renew their pledge to preserve the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation and to continue working together to build a peaceful, prosperous, drug-free, environmentally sustainable and developed Thoubal, thereby contributing meaningfully to the realisation of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
She concluded by expressing the hope that the National Flag would always fly high with pride, honour and dignity.
Later, appreciation certificates were distributed to the employee of the district in recognition for their service.
