Nameirakpam Loken resigns as Manipur Congress president

On Tuesday, Congress presidents in Punjab, UP, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, where the party suffered setbacks were told to resign to enable reorganisation of the party.

Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Nameirakpam Loken Singh has resigned from his post after Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked the PCC presidents of the five states that went to polls  to resign for reorganisation of the state bodies.

“Taking responsibility of the major defeat of the candidates of Indian National Congress (INC) in the last 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election, 2022, I do hereby submit my resignation tender from the Presidentship of the Manipur Congress Committee (MPCC) of the INC on moral ground with immediate effect,” said a statement issued by Loken.

On Tuesday, Congress presidents in Punjab, UP, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, where the party suffered setbacks were told to resign to enable reorganisation of the party. 

Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal was first to put in his papers. “I had decided to resign on the day of poll results, but was waiting for the high command’s directive,” he tweeted.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu also on Tuesday resigned from his post after taking moral responsibility for the party’s humiliating defeat in the state assembly polls. 

In a one-line tweet on Wednesday, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu said, “As desired by the Congress President I have sent my resignation.”
