Massive avalanche hits Sikkim’s Nathula, 6 tourists dead, several injured; PM mourns

Gangtok: At least 6 tourists have been killed while over 80 are feared trapped after a major avalanche hit Sikkim’s Nathula on Tuesday, an official said.

Some of them were tourists. 30 people have been rescued and admitted to Manipal Hospital, here, they are tourists. Rescue operations are on, said Tenzing Loden Lepach, SP Gangtok, who is supervising the rescue operations on the spot.

“Border Road Organization, Police and Army joined by local Taxi drivers have been actively trying to locate the people buried. ‘350 others stranded have been rescued after clearing snow from the road,” said Lt Col Mahendra Rawat.

PM, Shah condole loss of lives

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday expressed grief over loss of lives after a massive avalanche hit Sikkim’s Nathula.

Taking to twitter, the PM wrote, “Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected.”

“My sincerest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim.We are closely monitoring the situation and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon,” Shah tweeted.

The Home Minister also wished speedy recovery of those injured in the tragic incident.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also took to the micro-blogging site and expressed deep grief over the loss of lives.

“Deeply saddened by the news of many people losing their lives and several tourists being trapped after an avalanche hit Sikkim’s Nathu La. My deepest sympathies are with the families of the victims. We have utmost faith in the rescue teams involved in saving lives,” Kharge said.
