Imphal: In a surprise development, Congress leader Mairembam Prithviraj joined the BJP on Friday, in a shot in the arm for the saffron party as it prepares for assembly elections in Manipur scheduled for early next year.

He joined the BJP in presence of Chief Minister N Bien Singh, BJP state unit president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, Dr Sambit Patra, State Prabhari.

The 40-year-old Prithviraj, a two-time MLA from Moirang Assembly Constituency under Bishnupur district, comes from a well known Congress family.

His father Mairembam Manindra was a noted Congress leader and was elected as an MLA from Moirang AC before he died in 2008 without completing his five years term. Prithiviraj is the nephew of late Mairembam Koireng Singh, aka Moirang Koireng, the first elected chief minister of Manipur, a freedom fighter (INA) and a veteran political leader.

With the Congress in dire straits in Manipur and he himself losing the 2017 State Assembly election, Prithviraj’s decision to join the BJP may help him politically at a time when the saffron party is working overtime to boost its ranks in preparation for the Assembly polls.

Welcoming his former comrade in the erstwhile Congress party, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that leaders from different ideologies continue to repose faith in PM Narendra Modi’s leadership and vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.

He is among the high profile leaders of the Congress party who have joined the BJP in recent times. Former Congress president Govindas Konthoujam joined the saffron party in August this year.

The joining in ceremony was also attended by Pratima Bhoumik, MP and Election Co-Incharge, P Sharat, MLA Moirang AC, L Sushindro Meitei, MLA and other senior party leaders of the state.
