Agartala: Amidst the growth of Trinamool Congress in Tripura over the last two months and defection from ruling BJP and opposition CPI-M and Congress, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb poaching in the stronghold of leftists, Belonia in South Tripura yesterday.

While attending the executive meeting of BJP’s farmers’ wing – Kishan Morcha in Belonia, as many as 1394 voters of CPI-M have joined BJP and Chief Minister welcomed them with the party flag and urged them to work together to strengthen the base of BJP.

The BJP claims it was the biggest joining programme of any party in the state since the 2018 assembly polls. After the West Bengal elections, a large number of people from various parties have joined Trinamool that boosted Mamata Banerjee to start aggressive political activities in Tripura keeping eyes on the 2023 assembly polls.

However, such large-scale desertion from opposition CPI-M to BJP has changed the political atmosphere of the state. According to BJP, after the arrival of the Trinamool Congress in the state, the party has re-oriented its strategies and concentrated on the public demands and improving governance further.

The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhowmik was given extra responsibility to supervise the activities for spreading the party base at the grassroots level. She has been holding a number of rallies for, first time after being appointed as a central minister across the state and there was an overwhelmed response, which indicated that people are with the party, said BJP Spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty.

Rubbished the claim of Trinamool that over five lakh voters in Tripura have switched over to TMC in last few months, Chakraborty said that such tall and unrealistic claims have no basis and added, “The party which started its activities for one and half months, yet not able to open an office and announced any committee, the future of the party is well-understood.”

He said that West Bengal Ministers and MPs have been enjoying leisure in one of the best hotels of the city for one month and making false propaganda against the BJP-IPFT government in Tripura, just to divert the public attention from their failure to restore peace and democracy in West Bengal and security to the BJP supporters.

“In post-poll violence, a large number of BJP workers were murdered and a few thousands of BJP supporters in West Bengal were staying away from the home for three months. The brutal attacks are being made against the marginalised section who opposed Trinamool Congress in the last election. But these people here are raising slogans for democracy,” he stated.

He alleged that Trinamool Congress has been trying to instigate some youths for violence and acting on drama scripts by their education minister and renowned television actor Bratya Basu. They are hiring an aeroplane to visit Tripura and triggering violence with the rejected elements of BJP here but people of the state didn’t accept their tactics and give them a befitting reply in the next election, Chakraborty added.

On the other, while addressing the gathering in Belonia, Chief Minister advised the youths, instead of wasting time in the name of protests and gossip, they must spend time on the various steps being undertaken by the government to ensure income to all, as the benefits of various welfare schemes are being given among the people without judging the political colour.
