The incident occurred around 1:30 am when Haridas was returning to his house after fishing. The culprits, who came in two motorbikes, attacked him with swords near his house premises. On hearing the screams of Haridasan, local residents shifted him to Thalassery Cooperative hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

CPI(M) sources said that an altercation occured between CPI(M) and BJP workers on February 7 during a temple function in Poonol and suspected that the murder is related with this incident.

CPI(M) called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Thalassery Municipality and New Mahe panchayat, bordering Mahe in Puducherry State as a protest against the murder. Tension prevailed in Thalassery and nearby areas and a large number of police were camping at New Mahe and nearby areas. However, the situation was under control, police said.

Meanwhile, BJP district president N Haridas said that Sangh Parivar workers have no role in the murder and police should investigate and arrest the real accused behind the attack.
