Churachandpur: In the wake of reported cases of suspected dengue, typhoid, flu-like illnesses and rising concerns regarding the spread of ‘Hand Foot Mouth’ disease particularly among children, Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, IAS, today convened an emergency meeting with health and education officials at his chamber at the Mini Secretariat, Tuibong, to assess and review the district’s preparedness in tackling the situation.
The meeting was attended by ADC Lalrobul Fimate, MCS; CEO/ADCC Shokhongam Baite, MCS, along with DI/AIs; Chief Medical Officer Dr Ph. Henkhoneng Mate; Dr. Kh. Sania Monica, the Medical Superintendent; Zonal Education Officer Esther Chingneikim, along with DI/AIs; and other Medical Officers.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the Chief Medical Officer and the Zonal Education Officer to intensify awareness campaigns in villages, schools and colleges and to strengthen preventive measures against the spread of the disease. He also instructed the concerned departments to ensure the elimination of mosquito-breeding sites within a 50-100 metre radius of residential areas.
The meeting also reviewed the spread of ‘Hand Foot Mouth’ disease among children, particularly those in the 0-5 age group. The disease is characterized by fever, skin rashes, inflammation and blisters. The Chief Medical Officer appealed to the public not to panic, stating that symptomatic treatment was being provided for affected children, and that there have been no fatalities.
The district has also been witnessing a seasonal rise in typhoid cases. Health officials said the situation was being closely monitored and managed through the existing health system.
Later in the evening, the Deputy Commissioner visited the District Hospital and interacted with doctors, nurses, other staff and patients. He inspected the Medicine Ward, outpatient department, Blood Bank, AB-PMJAY/CMHT Help Desk and dialysis unit. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the health officials to coordinate with other departments for IEC activities to spread awareness at different places including schools. He also instructed the CMO and MS, DH to issue a dedicated helpline number and set up a dedicated cell of medical experts.
