Guwahati: In the first case of its nature, a woman doctor in Dibrugarh district in Assam was infected with two different variants of COVID 19 virus-Alpha and Delta at the same time, tests at regional medical research centre (RMRC) in Dibrugarh of Indian Council for Medical Research revealed.
Even after taking the two doses of the vaccine, the doctor got infected by both variants of the virus a month after taking the second dose.
Notably, she had mild symptoms and recovered without hospitalisation.
“It may happen she got infected with the double virus within a very short period before antibodies could develop,” a Senior scientist at RMRC said.
Analysis showed that during the initial phase of the second wave in Assam around February-March this year, most Covid-19 cases were due to the Alpha variant. Then after the assembly elections in April, cases of Delta variant infections started to emerge.
