Meghalaya wins SKOCH award 2026 for AI-Based breast cancer screening

A total of 1,683 women have been screened under the pilot initiative so far, with high-risk cases referred for further clinical evaluation.

Shillong: The Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya, has been conferred the prestigious SKOCH Award 2026 for its innovative initiative, “Transforming Breast Cancer Screening in Meghalaya Using Artificial Intelligence.” The award was presented on 20th June 2026 during the 108th SKOCH Summit – Public Policy Forum on “Regulatory Framework for Viksit Bharat,” held at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi.

The award was received on behalf of the Department by Dr. (Mrs.) Carolinda Iangrai, Additional Director of Health Services (MCH & FW)-cum-State Nodal Officer, NP-NCD, NHM Meghalaya, and Tenneychell Khongrangjem, State Epidemiologist-cum-State Programme Officer, NP-NCD, NHM Meghalaya.

The initiative uses AI-based thermal screening technology to support early detection of breast cancer, particularly among women in remote and underserved areas of the State. Implemented as part of Meghalaya’s broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare services, the programme integrates community outreach, screening, referral, and follow-up mechanisms to ensure timely diagnosis and care.

1,683 women screened till date under the pilot initiative, with identified high-risk cases referred for further clinical evaluation.

The Health & Family Welfare Department dedicates this recognition to the healthcare professionals, programme personnel, and frontline health workers whose unwavering commitment and dedicated efforts have made the successful implementation of this initiative possible. The Department further reiterates its commitment to advancing innovative, evidence-based, and technology-enabled healthcare interventions aimed at improving access, quality, and health outcomes for the people of Meghalaya.
