Shillong: Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui today graced a one-day State Seminar on “Implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward,” organised by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Meghalaya, Shillong.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted key challenges in implementing NEP 2020 in Meghalaya, calling for collaborative efforts and practical solutions to ensure its effective implementation and holistic student development.

He identified major concerns, including resource-sharing among schools under different management systems, language-related challenges, shortage of teachers, continuous professional development, dependence on private coaching and the effective integration of technology in education.

Emphasising the need for inclusive and student-centred learning, Rymbui said classrooms must become more engaging and enjoyable, providing students with opportunities to discover and develop their individual talents. He stressed that education should extend beyond academic performance to include skills development and practical learning, enabling students to pursue their interests and prepare for future opportunities.

The Minister also highlighted the challenges of implementing the three-language policy in Meghalaya, given the State’s linguistic diversity and varying availability of teachers across different mediums of instruction. He underscored the importance of regular teacher training and ensuring that the knowledge gained through such programmes translates into improved classroom practices.

On technology integration, he called for clear guidance and appropriate digital resources to help schools and teachers adopt tools that genuinely enhance teaching and learning.

Concluding his address, Rymbui acknowledged the challenges posed by resource constraints, infrastructure gaps and teacher availability, and urged stakeholders to work together through meaningful dialogue and practical interventions to strengthen the State’s education system.

Commissioner and Secretary, Education Department, Vijay Kumar Mantri in his speech highlighted the State’s progress in implementing NEP 2020, particularly in foundational-stage education, formative assessment, experiential learning and competency-based education. He emphasised that effective implementation remains a key priority.

The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on implementation challenges and explore practical ways to advance inclusive and quality education in Meghalaya.
