Imphal: Meritorious students and sports persons of Konthoujam and Yurembam Gram Panchayat, Konthoujam Assembly Constituency were felicitated Saturday. The felicitation functions were held at Yurembam Awang Leikai and Knthoujam Kangjeibung Community Hall respectively.
Speaking as the chief guest at the occasion held at Yurembam Awang Leikai organized by Yurembam Development Club, YDC, Health and IPR Minister, Dr. S. Ranjan Singh, said that through proper education we can instill a sense of patriotism and nationalism. Students should have ideas for which reason they have been felicitated and given awards on such occasions.
The event is organized in order to encourage and make improvements in the related fields, the minister added.
Ranjan also maintained that the students of this age need to have an idea of our history. They should understand the role played by our freedom fighters for the present generation. Remembering and honoring our patriots and following their foot-steps are the duties of the citizens. Their sacrifices and ideologies should be respected, the minister stated.
He said that the government is taking up steps for bringing improvements in all sectors. Public cooperation is required for fulfilling the objectives. Environment and climate change has also become a challenge for which we all need to come out and take a decision in this regard, he added.
President YDC, Dr. L. Sashikumar; ZP, Yurembam, Th. Nilamani Singh; Pradhan, Yurembam GP, M. Deben Singh; also shared the dais as president and guests of honour respectively.
Later, Minister Ranjan while speaking as Chief Guest, at the felicitation function held at Konthoujam Kangjeibung Community said that encouraging meritorious students will help to produce more and more talented students. Carrier guidance of the students is very much necessary for a successful future. Education does not mean only securing high score in examinations.
They also need to be taught about patriotism and the geography of the state. Manipur is culturally a rich state. We also have a rich tradition which is unique from others. We need to protect and preserve our rich cultural heritage, he added.
Minister further informed that the issue of drugs in the state has become serious. The government alone cannot solve this problem. We all need to join hands together on the campaign of the War on Drugs in order to save our future. Otherwise, the state will sink one day, he maintained.

Minister also distributed merit certificate awards to the meritorious students and sport persons of Yurembem and Konthoujam Gram Panchayat as a part of the occasions.
