Palakkad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday accused the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of betraying the people of Kerala “for a few pieces of gold”.

“About LDF it can be said, just like Judas betrayed Lord Christ for a few pieces of silver, LDF has betrayed Kerala for a few pieces of gold,” Modi said, while addressing his maiden public meeting here.

Kerala is set to go to the Assembly poll on April 6 to elect 140 MLAs. The counting of votes polled in the election will be taken up on May 2.

Modi’s comments are believed to be in an apparent reference to the infamous 2020 Kerala gold smuggling case.

He said that over the last few years, the politics of Kerala is seeing a major shift. “This shift is being driven by the aspirations of the youth, especially the first time voter in the state.

The first time voter of Kerala is very disappointed with LDF and the Opposition UDF,” Modi pointed out.

The Prime Minister said that for many years, the worst kept secret of Kerala politics was the friendly agreement of UDF and LDF.

“Different name but working same. Both have their marked areas for making money,” Modi alleged.
