Imphal: Kshitij Tyagi, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in Geneva, has expressed serious concerns over the increasing influx of people from Myanmar into India’s Northeastern states.
He highlighted the ongoing challenge of transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking.
Tyagi made these remarks during a session on the human rights situation in Myanmar, held on the first day of the 56th regular session of the Human Rights Council, which began on June 18 and will continue until July 12, 2024.
As an immediate neighbour and friend of Myanmar, India has consistently called for an immediate cessation of all violence, the release of political detainees, humanitarian assistance, and the resolution of the crisis through constructive dialogue, Tyagi emphasized.
He expressed India’s deep concern over the situation in Myanmar and stressed the importance of achieving peaceful solutions that are led and owned by Myanmar. “We have always accorded a high priority to peace, stability, and development in Myanmar,” Tyagi stated.
He added that India has been making consistent efforts towards these objectives through humanitarian assistance, people-centric projects, and capacity-building initiatives in Myanmar.
Tyagi’s statement came at a time when Manipur, a northeastern state of India, was facing a huge influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar.
Earlier, State Chief Minister N Biren Singh said several new villages emerged in Manipur due to a massive influx from Myanmar.
Biren said that such illegal immigration and the unnatural growth of new villages caused massive changes in the demography of Manipur. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh
