Imphal: Manipur united on Tuesday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the June 18, 2001 incident, known as the Great Uprising and Unity Day.

This pivotal event in Manipur’s history was sparked by widespread discontent over the “Bangkok Agreement,” a controversial deal between the Government of India and the NSCN-IM.

The agreement extended a ceasefire “without territorial boundary,” raising fears about the compromise of Manipur’s integrity. Protests erupted into violence, resulting in the tragic deaths of 21 individuals and numerous injuries during clashes with law enforcement.

The United Committee Manipur (UCM) and the All-Manipur United Club Organisation co-sponsored the event, drawing a solemn gathering to honour the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the historic protests.

Nando Luwang, Vice Chairman of the Observation Committee for the 23rd Great June Uprising Unity Day, reaffirmed the community’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Manipur’s territorial boundaries.

“We stand resolute in protecting Manipur’s territorial integrity against all odds and external pressures,” Luwang declared.

Chairman Konthoujam Joychandra reflected on the tumultuous events of June 18, 2001, emphasizing the public’s outcry against what was seen as a betrayal by the government.

“The burning of the state assembly stands as a stark reminder of our resolve,” Joychandra remarked, highlighting the collective determination to resist any attempts to undermine Manipur’s unity.

The commemoration not only honoured those who laid down their lives but also underscored the resilience and unity of Manipur’s communities in facing challenges. As Manipur remembers its martyrs on this solemn occasion, the pledge to protect its territorial integrity remains steadfast, echoing throughout the ceremonies as a testament to the enduring spirit of the people.
