Garo Labor Corps Day observed in Meghalaya

Floral tributes were paid to the memory of the brave Garo men who had gone to France to help the Allied Forces during the First World War on occasion of the Garo Labor Corps Day

Tura: Floral tributes were paid to the memory of the brave Garo men who had gone to France to help the Allied Forces during the First World War on occasion of the Garo Labor Corps Day here at the district headquarters of the West Garo Hills on Saturday. 

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, Tura Swapnil Tembe, superintendent of police, VS Rathore, chairman, Tura Municipal Board, JD Sangma, chief executive officer, Tura Municipal Board, Rikse 

R Marak, other officials, senior citizens and staff of Tura Municipal Board (TMB) were among those present at the function.

This day is observed every year to mark the safe arrival of the members of the Garo Labour Corps and in homage to those who laid down their lives and performed noble works as recruits of the 69th Garo Labour Corps in France during the First World War.

As a mark of respect and remembrance of these recruits, the Garo Labour Corps Day was observed in a befitting manner with dignitaries laying floral wreaths on the Cenotaph at Babupara, Tura along with ‘salami’ (gun salute) and prayers in honour of the departed souls.

The salutation was performed by District Police and 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre. Two minutes of silence was also observed in memory of the departed souls.

Earlier during the function, assistant engineer, TMB, Cheyziel A Sangma highlighted the significance of Garo Labour Corps Day while chairman of the Board, JD Sangma led the gathering in prayer.

The song in Garo “Aiao Gisik Ra’beani”, specially composed to remember the Garo Recruits by Bestone D Momin was also presented during the function.
