Bengaluru: With the filing of Suraj Revanna’s nomination for MLC polls, PM Deve Gowda’s entire family has entered into politics.
Suraj, who is Gowda’s grandson, is the eighth and last member of the family to jump into politics. He is son of former minister and JDS leader HD Revanna, who is son of ex-PM.
A doctor by profession, Suraj is contesting on JDS ticket from Hassan local authorities’ seat, which is the family’s bastion.
Suraj’s mother Bhavani is former member of the Hassan Zilla Panchayat and brother Prajwal is a MP from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency.
Gowda is the Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, and his other son, HD Kumaraswamy, is former chief minister and MLA from Channapatna.
Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha is Ramanagara MLA, and his son Nikhil, is JDS youth wing president. He had lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Mandya to actress-turned-politician Sumalatha Amabareesh.
The Karnataka Legislative Council will hold its biennial election for 25 seats from 20 local authorities constituencies on December 10.
The elections have been necessitated by the expiry of the term of office of the 25 MLCs on January 5 next.
Only seven candidates have been fielded by JDS citing lack of time to cover all the constituencies.
Apart from Suraj, other candidates are Anil Kumar R (Tumakuru), CN Manjegowda (Mysuru), N Appajigowda (Mandya), Vakkaleri Ramu (Kolar), HM Ramesh Gowda (Bengaluru Rural), HU Isak Khan (Kodagu).
Both the BJP and Congress have already announced their candidates.
The deadline for withdrawing candidature is November 26. The vote count will take place on December 14.
