Imphal: L Sanjoy Singh, father of L Shamjai, candidate of NPP at Andro was shot at by unknown persons at Yairipok Yambem Leikai on Friday night, police on Saturday said.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma visited Sanjoy here on Saturday at Shija hospital and enquired about the health of the injured person. Sangma urged the Election Commission of India to see into the developments in Manipur. Sangma said he was anguished that the father of a candidate of NPP was shot and injured.
He added these incidents were tarnishing the sacred essence of our democracy. Yumnam Joykumar Singh, Deputy Chief Minister who also visited the hospital said this was not the first time political opponents attacked NPP candidates.
He said earlier NPP candidates were attacked at Khurai, Chandel constituencies also. He also urged the ECI to look into the pre-poll violence in Manipur.
The Congress party had also earlier submitted a memorandum to the CEO, Manipur to urge the ECI to enquire into the attacks on candidates and their supporters. Manipur will go to poll on February 28 and March 5 next.
