BSF recovers arms, ammunition hidden by GNLA in Meghalaya

Shillong: Troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF) has recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition hidden by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district bordering Bangladesh.

Based on specific input, BSF spokesperson, UK Nayal said the troopers on Thursday conducted a search operation in a forest near Chegnigre village under Rongra police station.

One USA made 0.32 mm calibre revolver, 50 number of 7.62 mm rounds and four numbers of Iron Magazine supposed to be AK SVD Airsoft Sniper Rifles were recovered from the forested area, Nayal said.

The outlawed GNLA has hidden arms at various places in Garo Hills which they use mainly for extortion purposes and other illegal activities.

The seized arms and ammunition were later handed over to police station Rongra for further necessary action.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of BSF (Meghalaya Frontier), Hardeep Singh said, “Our network is a place to unearth such more cache of arms & ammunition which are hidden by banned outfits in remote jungle areas and we hope that in future more such successful operations will be conducted.

“BSF is successfully performing multifarious duties which include guarding the International Border, creating a sense of security among border population and their upliftment besides dealing with insurgent groups and foiling their nefarious designs,” he said.
