Shillong: The body of 25-year-old from Rajasthan, who was swept away by raging waters under the base of Moopun waterfalls four days ago, was found floating in a water body in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, on Thursday, police said.

Monu Maheria from Sikar district, who was working in a hardware shop in Jowai, the district headquarters of West Jaintia Hills, had gone for a picnic to Moopun waterfalls in Mutong village along with 11 others on  May 15.

“The dead body of Monu Maheria was found floating in the water body of Moopun waterfalls this morning,” Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, the district police chief of East Jaintia Hills, said over phone.

He said the body has been shifted to Khliehriat Community Health Centre (CHC) morgue for autopsy.

On Wednesday, district authorities had written to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)

to assist the State to launch search and rescue Maheria after the State and Rescue Team along with Shillong-based State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) failed to rescue the missing person.

Mutong villagers had warned Maheria and his friends not to venture to the base of the waterfalls as the water level is high due to heavy rain. However, they did not pay heed to the local villagers and went right down to the base of the waterfall and started swimming and taking photographs.
