Shillong: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is a constituent of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has condemned the “violent attacks on innocent commuters, including school going children in uniform and journalists,” during the Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People’s (FKJGP) rally in Shillong on Friday.

BJP state President, Ernest Mawrie referring to the apology tendered by the FKJGP president said, though the apology “is a step in the right direction, it is not enough.”

“The FKJGP should come forward and identify and hand over all miscreants who were responsible for the assaults, rampage and vandalism,” Mawrie said, adding the FKJGP should cooperate with the police in nabbing those guilty.

Mawrie said that FKJGP should co-operate more so because few people responsible for the events on Friday were tarnishing the image of not only the organisation but the community at large.

Criticising the state police for taking no action while the assault continued, the BJP president asked why the state machinery remained a mute spectator to such a horrific incident.

“All those entrusted with the security of public lives and property need to introspect on their designation and decide if they are fit enough, not only by qualification but more so morally to hold the position entrusted to them,” Mawrie said.

Stating that the violent assault “damaged the image of Shillong and Meghalaya all over the world,” Mawrie said the “BJP higher ups are very concerned about the break-down of the law and order in Shillong.”

The BJP also demanded of the state government should compensate those injured, and nab the culprits.

Mawrie said, a policy needs to be drawn on use of masks in such rallies.
