Sivsagar: Sivsagar constituency, the seat of power of the erstwhile Ahom Kingdom, from where the jailed activist Akhil Gogoi is contesting, in a three-cornered fight with Congress and BJP, is expected to witness a seesaw battle.

A testament to just how important Sivsagar is to all in the fray, could be gauged from the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched their election campaign in Assam from the constituency,

And another significant aspect is that Akhil Gogoi, who is contesting from the constituency from a Raijor Dal ticket is fighting the elections from behind the bars. Gogoi is lodged in a jail in Guwahati since 2019 on inciting anti-CAA protests in Assam.

Gogoi has appealed to the people of Sivasagar to vote for him, hearing to the inner conscience, to defeat BJP’s alleged communal designs and anti-people policies.

The Congress, BJP has also intensified their campaign in the prestigious 108 Sivasagar Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC).

Congress which has won the seat since 2001, has fielded, youth leader Subhamitra Gogoi from the constituency and is banking on to cash on anti-CAA sentiments.

In 2016, BJPs candidate Surobhi Rajkumari who lost to Congress candidate by a narrow margin of 542 votes, is upbeat this time that she will turn the tables. She is ably supported by the central leadership of BJP, who have campaigned for her in the constituency, starting from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Smriti Irani.

Total voters in the constituency are 1,51,512 of which 75,373 are males and 76,139 are females. By Abhijit Deb
