Guwahati: More than 2 lakh people have been affected by the surging floods across Assam as rains continued to lash different parts of the state on Monday.
Rising waters of the rivers Brahmaputra and Barak and their tributaries are creating havoc, inundating fresh areas with 24 districts now bearing the brunt of nature’s fury. Six people are missing, officials said.
In the last twenty-four hours, the state has received 47.1 mm of showers, taking the total cumulative rainfall to 592.6 mm, and affecting 20 more districts.
Seventy-two relief camps are now sheltering more than 33,238 people displaced from their homes due to the floodwaters.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 811 villages have been severely hit by the floods and 20,587.32 hectares of arable land destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Barak Valley districts of Assam – Hailakandi, Karimganj and Cachar, worst hit by the floods– are likely to face food shortage in the coming days as there are reports that the food corporation of India (FCI) has a stock of only 15 days of food grains left for the three districts.
Meanwhile, rail connectivity to Southern Assam remained snapped for the third consecutive day, though road connectivity is being restored in the Barak Valley.
