Imphal: The Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, held the 45th Annual Fish Fair-cum-Fish Crop Competition 2024 today at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal East’s Palace Compound.
Addressing the event as Chief Guest, Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, Rajya Sabha MP, underscored the cultural importance of fish to the Meitei community, noting its significance throughout life stages. He expressed concern over the decline in native fish species and Manipur’s increased reliance on imported fish due to limited domestic production. Maharaja Sanajaoba advocated for more community involvement in fish farming and rainwater harvesting, suggesting that building fish ponds should take precedence over constructing community halls to help address the state’s future fish supply needs.
He commended the Department of Fisheries for its ongoing initiatives and encouraged the public to take personal steps in fish farming. Recognizing the efforts of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, he emphasized the need for collaboration between government and citizens to restore native fish populations, including species like Sareng, Pengba, Ngaton, and Ngahou.
Presiding over the event, Fisheries Minister Heikham Dingo Singh highlighted significant strides in fish production since 2017-2018, under the leadership of the Chief Minister. He discussed initiatives such as the Loktak Livelihood Mission (LLM) and the Sareng Project, both aiming to boost fish breeding and production across Manipur.
Minister Dingo acknowledged a recent increase in production but noted a continuing shortage of around 15,000 metric tons, which results in over 200 crore rupees in annual spending on fish imports. He praised the Fisheries Department for its success in reviving native species, including Meitei Sareng, Khabak, and Ngaton, displayed at the Fish Fair. He proudly announced Manipur’s achievement as the first state in India to breed Sareng fingerlings.
In his concluding remarks, the Minister urged the people to support the Blue Revolution, promoting fish farming as a route to economic self-reliance and growth.
