Shillong: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) on Saturday urged the Union government and the Manipur government to take immediate action against those involved in the incident of two Vaiphei tribal women being paraded naked in violence-hit Manipur.

“This horrific act of human depravity threatens the dignity and safety of every woman and child of the nation,” the MSCW said in a statement.

The Commission also urged the authorities concerned in Manipur to ensure that all victims of the ethnic clash there are given the necessary help and rehabilitation.

Expressing gratitude to the National Human Rights Commission and the Supreme Court for taking cognisance of the horrific incident, the women’s body said, “The Chief Justice of India has rightly stated that ‘using women as an instrument to inflict gender violence is deeply, deeply disturbing.”

“We urge the Centre and the State government to take immediate action against those involved in this horrific act of human depravity that threatens the dignity and safety of every woman and child of the nation,” the Commission said.

“Any act of violence committed to outrage any woman’s modesty is not acceptable in a constitutional democracy. We are saddened to see this gross violation of Human Rights especially of minorities and the vulnerable,” the Commission further expressed.

Anticipating that such acts are not committed anymore in the future and wishing Manipur peace and stability, the women’s commission said, “Violence in any form can never be the answer.”
