Manipur farmer wins Best Progressive Fish Farmer Award in Tripura

The award was given in recognition of his "significant contribution and commendable achievements" in developing fisheries and aquaculture in Manipur, officials said.

Agartala:  Salam Rohendro Singh, a fish farmer from Manipur, has won the Haricharan Das Best Progressive Fish Farmer Award, 2022, during an international conference held here on Tuesday.

The award was given in recognition of his “significant contribution and commendable achievements” in developing fisheries and aquaculture in Manipur, officials said.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a citation, and a trophy.

Born at Laphupat Tera Mayai Leikai in Imphal West District, Rohendro has a water body that spreads over an area of 5 hectares for culturing various commercially important and indigenous fish species of Manipur like IMCs, Exotic Carps, Osteobrama belangiri, Bangana dero, Lebo gonius, and Wallago attu (sareng). With his experience of more than twenty years, he has been able to market over 30 million spawn and 42 tonnes of table size fish within the state for the past three years. 

Earlier, he also won the best farmer prize for the highest fish production during an annual fish fair competition organised by the State Fishery Department in 2021. Rohendro was also given the Progressive Farmer Award for the year 2021–22, conferred by the ICAR: Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Nainital, Uttarakhand, in collaboration with the Coldwater Fisheries Society of India in July this year.   

The international conference was jointly organised by the College of Fisheries, Tripura; the College of Fisheries Lembucherra Alumni Association (COFLA); and North East Society for Fisheries and Aquaculture, India.
