Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday made wearing of masks mandatory in public places in the wake of the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the State.
On Wednesday, Meghalaya reported 102 new Covid-19 infections, the highest daily spike this year, taking the number of people currently infected with the virus in the State to 358, health officials said.
So far Meghalaya has registered 94511 confirmed cases, including 1595 cases of fatality and 92558 cases of recovery, including 16 that were recorded on Wednesday, as per government statistics.
Of the total new cases registered during the last 24 hours on Wednesday, West Garo Hills, including Tura reported the maximum number of 36 new cases today with the district accounting for 170 active cases, the highest in the state, 34 in East Khasi Hills district, 12 in Ri-Bhoi district, eight in South West Garo Hills district, Six in West Jaintia Hills district, five in North Garo Hills district and one in East Garo Hills district.
The number of active Covid-19 cases also increased to 103 in the East Khasi Hills district, which includes state capital Shillong.
Meanwhile, 43 Covid-19 infected patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the state, an official in the health department said, adding that four out of the total 12 districts had no active Covid-19 case as on date.
Taking note of the rise in the number of cases, Secretary Home (Political) Department, C.V.D. Diengdoh in his order asked all citizens to follow the Covid appropriate behaviour including wearing of mask in public places and maintaining social distances.
“All eligible citizens are to avail the free precautionary dose whereby such special vaccination camps will be carried out as part of the Covid Vaccination Amrit Mahotsav w.e.f. July 15 to September 30, 2022 which will be operationalised at big office complexes (public and private), industrial establishments, inter-state bus terminus, schools and colleges. In such special vaccination camps, vaccination shall be done and a Vaccination Certificate too will be provided,” the order specified.
Meanwhile, according to the National Health Mission record, 32139 health care workers have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, 29511 have been administered with the second dose and 10086 have taken the third precaution dose, while 97029 front-line workers have been vaccinated with the first dose, 85719 have received the second dose and 29717 have got the precaution shot, even as 1302607 persons from among the general public have been inoculated with the first dose, 950864 have been fully vaccinated with the second dose and 10885 citizens have taken the booster dose across the state till Wednesday.
