Itanagar: Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said India never attacked any country nor believed in expansionism while asserting that “whatever we do is only for self-defence”.

Addressing the ‘special’ session of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly here, the Vice President, without taking the name of China, said: “We never attacked any country rather other small countries came in, ruled us also because they made India as their colony. We don’t believe in colonialism. We don’t believe in expansion. That is the greatness of this country.”

“India never, never attack any country. Whatever we do is only for self-defence. This has to be kept in mind and this is our strength.”

The Vice President’s assertion bears great significance in the wake of reports of ‘incursion’ in the frontier state by Chinese PLA troops who had crossed over to the Indian side near Yangste in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector last week and some of them were detained by the Indian Army for a few hours before the issue was resolved by established mechanisms. The Army authorities, however, did not confirm the same.

“We believe in total unity and integrity of the country – Arunachal Pradesh to Andhra Pradesh, Kashmir to Kanyakumari – every inch of India is part of this great country that is ‘Bharat’. There is no question of compromise on that…this has to be kept in mind by all the people,” Naidu said.
