Imphal: In a significant recognition of service and dedication, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi conferred the prestigious Veteran Achievers Award to two retired Army officers from Manipur during the 77th Army Day parade held at the BEG Centre, Pune, Maharashtra, on Wednesday.

The honorees, Lt Col L. Manongba (Retd) of the 11 Gorkha Rifles and Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) P. Piju Mao (Retd), were recognized for their invaluable contributions to nation-building, service to their communities, and fostering unity during challenging times. Notably, they are the sole recipients of this newly instituted national-level award from Northeast India.

Lt Col L. Manongba (Retd): A Silent Champion of Welfare

Lt Col Manongba has made remarkable yet understated efforts to support servicemen and their families, especially those residing in Manipur’s most remote regions. Under his leadership, The Wings of Hope Charitable Trust has provided consistent financial assistance for the education of 60 orphaned students. These children, along with widows supported by the trust, are among the many victims of recent conflicts in Manipur.

The trust has also successfully initiated alternative livelihood programs for widows, empowering them to rebuild their lives. Additionally, Lt Col Manongba has facilitated access to financial aid and resources for numerous ex-servicemen families, further enhancing their quality of life.

Subedar Major P. Piju Mao (Retd): Empowering the Youth

Subedar Major Mao has played a pivotal role in uplifting the youth of Manipur through the Youth Upliftment & Empowerment Institute (YUE!), a pre-recruitment training center he established in Makhan Village, Senapati District. His relentless dedication has enabled nearly 100 young men to join the Indian Army as Agniveers, while many others have successfully joined the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

Since its inception, the institute has trained approximately 300 boys at minimal costs, providing them with opportunities to secure a stable future. Subedar Major Mao, a third-generation soldier, continues his selfless service to empower the next generation.

This recognition highlights the enduring contributions of these veterans, whose efforts extend beyond their military careers to strengthen their communities and inspire future generations.
