Trinamool wins three seats in GTA Election so far in Bengal

GTA, which came into being in 2011, has 45 seats spread across Kalimpong district and parts of Darjeeling district.

Darjeeling: The ruling Trinamool has won three seats in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) elections so far.

This is for the first time that the TMC has managed to win a seat in the GTA, alongside the newly floated Humro Party and the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha. The ruling party had fielded candidates for a total of 10 seats.

Anit Thapar’s Gorkha Republican Front and Humro Party won one seat each.

Binay Tamang from the ruling Trinamool Congress party emerged victorious in Darjeeling’s Dali. He won by more than 500 votes.

TMC’s Suman Gurung wins in Kalimpong’s Centre Number 35.

Anit Thapa-led Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha wins in Darjeeling District’s Sonada town. Independent candidate Bikash Rai wins a seat in Kalimpong.

Two independents have also emerged victorious in the GTA polls . Bikash Rai, an Independent candidate, won from Center Number 33, while another Independent candidate Anup Chetri is ahead in Center Number 34.

Voting for the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration in Darjeeling hills and Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad in north Bengal was held on June 26, which saw a turnout of 57 percent and 78.30 percent respectively.

GTA, which came into being in 2011, has 45 seats spread across Kalimpong district and parts of Darjeeling district.

By-elections were also held in six wards of six municipalities of the state. The TMC won four, whereas the Congress and the CPI(M) won one each.

By-polls were conducted in ward number 2 of Jhalda Municipality in Purulia, where sitting Congress councilor Tapan Kandu was shot dead in March, and ward number 8 of Panihati Municipality in North 24 Parganas district, where TMC councilor Anupam Dutta was gunned down.

CPI(M) ‘s Ashok Gangopadhyay won by a margin of 130 votes from ward number 16 of Chandannagar Municipality.
