Shillong: Meghalaya’s opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of violating COVID protocol by organising a sports tournament in Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills.

In a statement issued here, the TMC claimed that Sangma organised the sports tournament at the Police Parade Ground at Tura and the tournament is still on with “hundreds of people flouting Covid protocols at the day- night sports tournament” despite a recent order issued by the State government banning all kinds of official, public and political gatherings to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Emphasising that the State is going through a challenging time with the recent surge in cases, the TMC said such a tournament could be a “super- spreader” and displays the Chief Minister’s apathetic attitude towards the fight against COVID- 19.

“Given the drastic surge in COVID-19 cases in the past few days, the consequences of holding this tournament (from January 14 to 30) will be dev- astating,” the TMC stated.

It further said that with the “health infrastructure in a shambles” this “carelessness by the Chief Minister is shameful”.

The TMC further added that this was not the first time that the Chief Minister has flouted COVID protocol.

“Sangma flouted pre-cautionary measures during his visit to Batabari village under Rajabala constituency earlier this week where a large number of people gathered in the presence of newly elected NPP legislator Abdus Saleh,” the TMC added.
