Sikkim focusing on homestays for tourism, houses for rural poor

3000 of them have already been completed under the Sikkim Gareeb Awas Yojana, the Chief Minister's rural housing mission, according to state government sources.

Gangtok: Aspiring to bridge the rural-urban gap, the Sikkim government under Chief Minister P S Tamang is constructing 3050 houses for the rural poor under a state housing scheme for the poorer sections of the society. 

3000 of them have already been completed under the Sikkim Gareeb Awas Yojana, the Chief Minister’s rural housing mission, according to state government sources.

Altogether 45059 poor and deprived people would be accessing government schemes for house up-gradation and repairing. 

Over 10,000 farmers in the state have benefitted from the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana – a fully centrally funded scheme providing beneficiaries an income support of Rs.6000 per year. The entire responsibility of identification of beneficiary farmer families rests with the state/union territory governments.

To encourage tourism, the state’s main revenue earning industry, the government is giving incentives for starting homestay, and has undertaken several projects including the Eco-Tourism Pilgrimage Complex at Dodak in West Sikkim district, 

When the 1000 high-quality houses provided by the government for promoting homestays start functioning tourists will be shifting from urban to rural areas, said the official The houses are ethnically designed with Nepali, Bhutia, and Lepcha architecture.

A medical herb and spiritual healing complex is coming up in South Sikkim district, while the Ram Dham temple in east Sikkim and the Ropeway in Pelling (West Sikkim) are being revived.

To improve the health infrastructure for tackling any further outbreak of Covid, the government has established e 200 liters per minute PSA Medical Oxygen Generation plant at district hospital Geyzing under West Sikkim. 

Besides, the state has two oxygen plants in capital Gangtok and Singtam – both in East Sikkim district Two more oxygen plants are about to be started in South Sikkim district headquarters Namchi and Mangan under North Sikkim district.
