Showcause served to Tripura BJP MLA for joining under anti-defection law

Agartala: Tripura legislative assembly yesterday served notice to ruling BJP MLA in Tripura Asish Das a day after he joined Trinamool Congress following a petition seeking disqualification.

Under the 10th schedule of the Constitution, government Chief Whip Kalayani Roy moved the petition of Das’s disqualification on grounds of his defection from BJP. The assembly secretary BP Karmakar issued a one week notice to MLA Das asking him to submit his comment based on the petition as per anti-defection law.

Das admitted the receipt of notice and said he would reply explaining his stand-in due course. Tripura assembly had earlier initiated a similar move against MLA Brishaketu Debbarma of ruling BJP’s coalition partner IPFT after he joined royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s party TIPRA five months ago but yet to disqualify him.

However, BJP sources said in the case of Ashis Das, the assembly will take action as soon as possible because he had charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Saha for shielding Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb at the cost of the party in the state.

He had claimed because a large number of MLAs and senior leaders of BJP repeatedly sought a change of Chief Minister accusing him of sheltering criminals of CPM, indulging corruption and nepotism and persuading vendetta politics against the party MLAs and leaders whoever opposing his misdeeds.

The president of BJP Tripura state committee Dr Manik Saha argued that the party would not take any action as he has yet to resign from the party before joining another party but, the party is well-aware of his activities and activities and added, “We shall announce the decision at the appropriate time.”

Ashis Das has been in BJP for the past many years and in 2015 he had fought a by-election to Surma SC reserved seat of Dhalai district in North Tripura but lost. However, he won the seat in the 2018 assembly poll. His infight with the Chief Minister surfaced on the issue of the inclusion of SC representatives in the cabinet. Later, it turned bitter allegedly Ashis Das was abused and threatened by the Chief Minister on several occasion

A month ago, a 43-year-old BJP legislator, after shaving his head, offered puja and performed other rituals at Kalighat temple in Kolkata and said that political anarchy and chaos were prevailing in the BJP ruled Tripura where people are unhappy and desperately looking for a change in the state.
