New York: Renowned author Salman Rushdie, who faces death threats for years after writing ‘The Satanic Verses’, has been attacked on stage during an event at the Chautauqua Institution in New York, police said.
The author was attacked when he was being introduced. New York Police said they are investigating the attack on the author.
A man ran on stage and attacked him and the interviewer.
“On August 12, 2022, at about 11 am, a male suspect ran up onto the stage and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer. Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is not yet known,” New York State Police said in a statement.
The interviewer suffered a minor head injury. A State Trooper assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, it added.
Rushdie’s book ‘The Satanic Verses’ has been banned in many countries since many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.
