Imphal: The annual Emoinu Fish Festival, 2025 organized by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal witnessed a significant increase in fish production by surpassing the sale target fixed by the Department. Against the sale target of 80,000 kgs, the fish sale in the festival recorded 86,286 kgs comprising of IMCs, exotic carps, indigenous fish species, etc.
Fish Farmers of Imphal West District produced a total of 38,720 kgs of varieties of fish followed by Bishnupur District with 19,425 kgs, Thoubal District with 18,940 kgs and Imphal East with 4,720 kgs respectively. Other districts such as Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul also participated besides the office of Chief Executive Officer, FFDA, Imphal and Bishnupur.
The major highlight of the fish mela is sale the of Nung-Nga, a popular indigenous riverine fish found mostly in the major rivers of hill districts of Manipur. Around 1000 kilograms of Nung-Nga fish cultured in the farm ponds of Chungkham Kopeshwar Singh of Wangoi Makha Leikai and Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Khordak village was on sale.
The home grown Sareng (Wallago attu), was also on sale as the public demand of local Sareng is gaining momentum. A large crowd thronged the Sareng stall and it sold out like hot cake.
The Fish fair also registered a robust business of agro-horti products, dry fish and homemade products by Internally Displaced Persons of relief camps worth Rs.3.60 lakh.
The impressive scale of growth in fish production is a testimony of tireless efforts of fish farmers and the officials of Department of Fishery, Government of Manipur towards a sustainable fishery and aquaculture, stated a press note from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur.
