Opposition demands CBI probe on allegations of land grabbing against Assam CM’s wife

Executive president of Raijor Dal Jitul Deka said that Assam CM’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma is occupying around 18 acres of government land intended for landless individuals and institutions.

Guwahati: Opposition parties in Assam-Congress and regional party Raijor Dal, has levelled allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife to be allegedly involved in a land grabbing case and demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) and Enforcement Directorate.

Both the parties citing a news report filed by a web portal demanded a probe on the entire matter.

The news report claimed that a real estate company, co-founded by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, is occupying around 18 acres of government land intended for landless individuals and institutions.

The portal is one of its investigative stories stated that the in question, RBS Realtors Private Limited, acquired most of the 18 acres in two stages, first in 2006-2007 and then in 2009.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Bora has challenged Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to clarify his stand on the entire incident. “At a time when Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to set an example before the people on the issue of making government land encroachment- free, a national news web portal ‘The Wire’ has published a news item about the CM’s family members’ involvement in encroachment on government land by violating all rules, thereby leading to an unprecedented incident in the political history of Assam and causing consternation among the people in the state,” Bora said in a statement.
