One person arrested by Sikkim police for creating disharmony

He said Gupta had protested in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding the annulment of the Article if special facilities were not given to Bihar.

Gangtok: Sikkim Police has arrested one person, who had held a demonstration in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in September demanding special facilities for Bihar or scrapping of Article 371F of the constitution that provides special status to Sikkim.

Sumanta Gupta has been nabbed from Delhi for “disturbing peace and communal harmony” through his activities prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony, a senior police officer said on Monday.

Gupta has been remanded to police custody, Gangtok Police Superintendent Tenzing Loden Lepcha said.

He said Gupta had protested in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding the annulment of the Article if special facilities were not given to Bihar.

He said the incident had created a “huge sense of disharmony”

He was brought here on November 1, but the issue was not made pubic in view of the visit of the president to the Himalayan state.

The accused worked as security guard and food delivery man in Delhi.

Police Inspector Avinash Lamichaney led a team to various states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab and finally arrested Gupta from Delhi.

He has named five persons from Gangtok during the investigation, the police superintendent claimed.

All five have appeared before the police here following summons issued to them.
