Nearly 160 aspirant candidates for BJP tickets in Manipur; CM Biren, Sarda in Delhi to finalise final list

Imphal: Nearly 160 aspiring candidates are vying for BJP tickets for the forthcoming 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election, according to a highly placed source on Friday.

With nine in total, Sugnu Assembly constituency has the maximum number of intending candidates, followed by Kumbi and Uripok at eight, the sources said and added that at least eight women are among the intending candidates.

Legislative Assembly elections will be held in Manipur from February 27 to March 3, 2022, in two phases, to elect 60 members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. The votes will be counted and the results will be declared on March 10, 2022.

The source further informed that some of the sitting MLAs from the ruling party are likely to be dropped from the list of candidates which will be announced in the next few days.

The submission of forms for the intended candidates to the State election management committee of the party was over on Thursday, however, it was extended till Friday afternoon, it said.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and party president A Sharda Devi have rushed to the national capital to finalise the final list of candidates with party leadership. The first list of candidates is likely to be announced in the next two to three days, they said.

On the other hand, BJP ally National People’s Party (NPP) is likely to contest in nearly 40 seats on its own.

The NPP contested nine seats in the 2017 election and won four seats.
