Shillong: A Bill to establish a National Law University (NLU) of Meghalaya was introduced in the state assembly by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday.

“The government has decided that teaching and research facilities available in the law university can also be utilised to offer comprehensive legal training apart from the development of teaching and higher learning in law with powers to award degrees, diplomas, and other academic distinctions,” the Bill read. The Law university will impart legal education and training as mandated by the union ministry of law and justice.

The law university will be located at Shillong and it may establish campuses at such other places within Meghalaya as it may deem fit.

“The law university shall be fully funded through the grants allotted by the state government on the budget proposals submitted by the university. The grants provided by the state government shall be operated through the personal ledger account of the government,” the Bill read.
