Shillong: Voice of the People Party (VPP), a newly formed political party in poll-bound Meghalaya on Saturday officially launched “winnower” as the election symbol of the party.
VPP president, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit unveiled the party symbol at Smit village, about 12 Km from Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong.
“The VPP chooses “winnower” as the symbol of the party because it has deep ideological connotation which fits the ideology, aims and objectives of the party,” Basaiawmoit told UNI over phone.
Winnower is traditionally used by farmers to separate the chaff and the grain. While retaining the grain the chaff is thrown away. At the household, the people use the winnower clean rice from the husks.
“Likewise, the VPP is the party that strives to bring clean politics that will ensure good governance based on transparency, accountability, responsibility and equity,” Basaiawmoit said.
He said the party will ensure to do away with politics of arbitrariness, exploitation, nepotism, corruption, unaccountability and irresponsibility.
“We believe we can do it together,” the VPP chief exuded confidence.
The VPP is a newly formed party that was officially launched in November 2022 and the majority of the candidates are first-timers.
The party has nominated 16 candidates to contest the elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
