Meghalaya records two more COVID-19 deaths and 218 new cases

Shillong: Two more COVID-19 deaths and 218 new cases of infection pushed the number of fatalities to 1,339 and the number of active cases up to 1,970, even as 134 more recoveries surged the number of recovered cases to 74,380 in Meghalaya on Thursday, which has registered 77,689 confirmed cases so far.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said one of the two COVID-19 patients who died in East Khasi Hills district and West Jaintia Hills district, was not vaccinated against the virus.

Out of the 218 COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday, War said 82 new cases of infections were in West Jaintia Hills district, 65 in East Khasi Hills district, 38 in West Khasi Hills district, 11 in Ri-Bhoi district, seven in South West Khasi Hills district, five in North Garo Hills district, four in West Garo Hills district, three in East Jaintia Hills district, two in East Garo Hills district, one in South West Garo Hills district.

However, no fresh case of infection was detected in the South Garo Hills district.

The East Khasi Hills, which includes state capital Shillong, is the most COVID-19 affected district with 916 active cases and 925 deaths, followed by West Khasi Hills district with 394 active cases and 59 deaths, West Jaintia Hills district with 221 active cases and 117 deaths, Ri-Bhoi district with 164 active cases and 77 deaths, South West Khasi Hills district with 115 active cases and 14 deaths, West Garo Hills district with 86 active cases and 71 deaths, while the other districts had less than 50 active cases each, as per the latest official count.

Meanwhile, of the 1,002,326 persons tested for COVID-19 in the state till Wednesday, 9,24,637 persons were tested negative for the virus.
On the other hand, 32,043 health care workers have received the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 and 26,241 have been administered with the second dose, 96,952 front-line workers got the first jab and 71,534 took the second shot, 9,11,663 persons from among the general public have been inoculated with the first dose and 2,39,347 citizens have been fully vaccinated with the second dose across the State as on date.
