Shillong: Meghalaya-based Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) on Friday condemned the recent crime against women in the violence-hit Manipur and called on the Meira Paibis of Manipur to stand true to its commitment in protecting, promoting and upholding the respect and dignity of women in society.
“The KJCLF deplores these ghastly acts and in the strongest terms condemns all those who are directly involved and indirectly encourage such crimes. We call on the Meira Paibis of Manipur to stand true to your commitment to protecting, promoting and upholding the respect and dignity of women in society,” the KJCLF said in a statement.
“Against the backdrop of the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in Manipur with no end in sight, it is a disgrace to see that the perpetrators of the crime against women have stooped so low and degraded themselves to display that they are nothing short of being animals – mean, savage and preying on women who cannot defend themselves against the wild and frenzied mob,” it stated.
Appreciating the statement and intervention of the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, urging the government to take immediate action, the Church Forum said, “This is an assurance to the country and in particular to the victims of this crime that justice will be served.”
“With great dismay, it is noted that Chief Minister Biren Singh has acknowledged that there are 100s of cases such as these in Manipur, and that the Prime Minister while expressing pain and anger has stated that such crimes bring shame to the whole country. Indeed the PM’s assurance is heard loud and clear ‘that the guilty persons will not be spared’ and it is expected that this commitment of Mr Modi will happen indeed, and soon,” the statement said.
The KJCLF reaches out to our suffering sisters that in your anguish, trauma and delicate frame of mind, please remain strong and resilient in your spirit and be assured that you are in the embrace of our fraternity and prayerful friendship.
