Massive drug bust in Manipur: Drugs worth Rs 62 cr seized, 2 arrested

The successful bust was carried out based on credible intelligence inputs and corroborated by local sources, which revealed the movement of contraband from Myanmar towards India.

Imphal: In a significant operation against the illicit drug trade, the Assam Rifles stationed at Headquarters Veng, Churachandpur District, intercepted and seized a massive cache of banned substances, including Yaba tablets and Brown Sugar, valued at approximately ₹62 crore. The operation took place in the Mata Village area of Churachandpur District on January 16, 2025.

The successful bust, based on credible intelligence inputs and corroborated by local sources, revealed the movement of contraband from Myanmar towards Mata Village, located about five kilometers south of Headquarters Veng, Churachandpur.

A team of Assam Rifles established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) at Mata Village around 11:30 PM on January 15, 2025. At approximately 4:30 AM, a suspicious vehicle—a Toyota Fortuner with the registration number UP 16 DQ 5045—was intercepted. Upon inspection, two individuals were found in possession of contraband items, including Brown Sugar and WY/Yaba tablets.

The apprehended individuals were identified as:

  1. Chingsen (36), son of Thongkhatkham, from Mata Village, Churachandpur District.
  2. L. Pausuanlal Simte (38), son of L. Zamkhandou Simte, from Bible Hill Renkai, Churachandpur District.

The seized items include:

  • 208 soap cases of Brown Sugar valued at ₹12 crores.
  • 2 lakh WY/Yaba tablets worth ₹50 crores.
  • ₹3,37,500 in cash.
  • Four smartphones with six Indian SIM cards and one Burmese SIM card (MPT).
  • One Toyota Fortuner with registration number UP 16 DQ 5045.

The apprehended individuals and seized items were handed over to the Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation.

This major seizure highlights the Assam Rifles’ relentless efforts to combat the drug trade and uphold security in the region, according to a press note issued by the PRO, IGAR(S).

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, meanwhile, lauded the security forces and added there should be ‘no compromise on war on drugs’.
