Manipur’s 1st Tribal Film Fest concludes at Tamenglong

The three-day film festival was organised by Hornbill Entertainment, sponsored by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and supported by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Government of Manipur.

Imphal: The first tribal film festival conducted at Tamenglong district headquarters concluded Sunday with a host of awards being bestowed on deserving cinema technicians, artists, and filmmakers for their exceptional contributions to the scheme of film production in different dialects of the state.

The three-day film festival was organised by Hornbill Entertainment, sponsored by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and supported by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Government of Manipur.

The final award function of the competitive film festival, exclusive to the tribal dialects but featuring a wide range of unique films, was decorated by Janghemlung Panmei, MLA Tamenglong, as chief guest, and Bal Krishna Singh, Director, DIPR, Manipur, as the guest of honour. Promising singers from different districts presented their popular numbers before and during the award presentation.

Social worker Akinsin Gangmei, District Horticulture Officer Chunguang Pamei, former ADC members Ramningle Pame also attended the grand finale.

Panmei in his chief guest speech thanked the organiser and said, “This should be the beginning of a new era for tribal dialect films in Manipur.”

“Let us all garner all the multi-talents we have and take tribal films to greater heights.  From today onwards, let us all make sure that we are marching forward to make movies to influence our society,” the lawmaker said. 

He further said that movies are one of the best tools to showcase and promote one’s culture and traditions, as well as influence society positively. Usually, tribal people have different folktales and myths.

He also urged the Directorate of Information and Public Relations to lead the tribal people of Manipur to support filmmaking.

DIPR Director Bal Krishna Singh narrated how the festival came about and expressed hope that the Manipur film industry would soon be able to compete at the international level. 

He said that his directorate would soon organise a film certificate course in the coming days so that those interested in filmmaking could get the most out of it.

Kachangthai Gonmei, festival director for the 1st Tribal Film Festival, requested the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting continue financial assistance for the coming film festival to uplift and promote the tribal film industry.

Balkrishna Singh, director, DIPR, and Guest of Honor, presented the best film award won jointly by ‘Ning Ngam Mak Ge, a Rongmei film and ‘Peral Thingbol’ an Anal film sharing a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. The list of winners in each category is as follows:

Bobby Wahengbam, Maipaksana Haorongbam, Ronel Haobam and Dr. Meena Longjam, all National Film Award winning filmmakers. Twenty-seven feature films, six short and two documentary films entered for an award category.

Hundreds of delegates from various districts and locals thronged the Applo public ground to make the Grande Finale and award  ceremony a grand success and memorable.
