Manipur: Kangpokpi civil orgs, chiefs declare support for CM’s ‘War on Drugs’ campaign

Imphal: From today, let us take a new step towards building a drug-free New Manipur and focus mainly on bringing development, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said Thursday welcoming Civil Society Organisations, village chiefs and other leaders of different communities from Kangpokpi district for declaring support to the government’s War on Drugs campaign.

Addressing media persons in this regard at the Darbar Hall, Chief Minister’s Secretariat this evening, the Chief Minister said that the government is fully focused on bringing development and delivering welfare benefits to the general public.

“Today with Kangpokpi joining in the campaign, I firmly believe that the war on drugs campaign will be successful”, the Chief Minister expressed. It may be mentioned that CSOs, village chiefs, and leaders of various districts and areas including Senapati, Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong, Noney, Tengnoupal, Saikul AC have already declared their support for the campaign.

Expressing his gratitude to the general public for all the support, the Chief Minister said that the movement has gained momentum with the support of the general public. He added “what we are doing today is not for ourselves, but for our future generation”.

Ration shops will be opened in the interior parts of the hills to ensure that foodgrains are available to the public, the Chief Minister said asserting that the government is fully focused on bringing development and delivering welfare benefits to the general public.

Minister and MLA Kangpokpi Nemcha Kipgen read out a proceeding of an emergency meeting held by several CSOs on May 18 declaring support for the War on Drugs. During the meeting, it was unanimously resolved to ban the illegal cultivation of poppy plants with immediate effect within the administrative jurisdiction of Kangpokpi District and declare it a Drug-Free Zone in support of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s initiative on the War on Drugs.

Minister for Tribal Affairs and Hills, Letpao Haokip, leaders of Sadar Hill Chief Association, Kuki Students’ Organisation, Women organisations, Naga organisations based in Kangpokpi, Gorkha organisations attended the press briefing.

Saitu AC MLA, Haokholet Kipgen read out a pledge taken by the CSOs to support the War on Drug campaign.
