Imphal: Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey on Saturday visited relief centres at Churachandpur and appealed to all to work together for restoration of peace, normalcy and harmony in the State.
To show her deepest sympathy to the two ‘sisters’ whose modesty was outraged publicly by an unruly mob on May 4, the Governor personally met them and handed a cheque of Rs 10 lakh each to their families. The whole country is ashamed of the incident, she said. Their fate would not be forgotten and necessary financial and moral support will be given to them, she assured.
The Governor interacted with about 170 internally displaced people and inspected the relief centres by visiting rooms where affected people are staying and distributed relief materials (hygiene kits per family, eatables to kids with some cash amount). Governor made an appeal to the youth of Manipur not to take law in their hands and abstain from unlawful activities creating law and order situation in the State.
Uikey said she was visiting the camps to console, empathise and extend her support to the affected people. The government will provide compensation to the affected people, she said, while also assuring to do everything possible for restoration of peace and the future of the people.
The Governor also interacted with families of ex-servicemen and representatives of some organisations . Anusuiya Uikey said she visited the district for the second time to hear the problems of the people. So far, some of the problems have been taken care of. Flow of basic amenities, including medicine, has been hampered due to blockade along the roads. As such, she has brought some medical supply and other relief materials including mosquito nets, tarpaulin, hygiene kits, etc. along with her chopper, she said.
Uikey further assured to extend all help for the restoration of peace and normalcy.
Saying that she felt the pain and sufferings of the affected people and their eagerness to return to their respective home, the Governor appealed to the two communities to come together, negotiate and find a durable solution to end the violence.
Appealing all concerned not to resort to vigilantism, the Governor reiterated that various Central forces are in place to ensure security for all. She appealed to all concerned to extend support for restoring peace and normalcy in the State.
