Imphal: As the state commemorates Patriots’ Day on Tuesday, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh paid tribute to the selfless sacrifices made by the forefathers of Manipur in defense of their homeland.

Extending his warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Patriots’ Day 2024, Governor Acharya remarked, “This significant day reminds us of our heroic ancestors like Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Chirai Naga, Pukhrambam Kajao, Niranjan Subedar, and many other martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of their motherland.”

He added, “These brave souls, along with many others who were exiled from Manipur for life, stood firm in their belief in the freedom of their nation, challenging the might of the British Empire in 1891. They chose death and imprisonment over a life without freedom.”

The Governor further emphasized that this historic day serves as a reminder that unity is essential for preserving our freedom. “As we observe Patriots’ Day, let us pledge to stand united and fight against any forces that threaten the freedom and integrity of our nation, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or other differences,” Governor Acharya urged.

Joining the people of Manipur in the Patriots’ Day observance, he wished for the success of the celebrations held across the state and beyond.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, in his message, stated, “Patriots’ Day, observed annually on August 13, honors those who laid down their lives fighting against the formidable British forces in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. The day recognizes the supreme sacrifices of our heroes, including Yuvraj Tikendrajit Singh, Thangal General, Chairai Thangal, Purambam Kajao, and the hundreds of soldiers who valiantly defended the sovereignty of our motherland.”

He continued, “Our indigenous people have coexisted peacefully for generations, but today, divisive and communal forces threaten the fabric of our society. History teaches us that unity makes us strong, while division makes us vulnerable. We must be vigilant against those who seek to divide us and work proactively to build a society where every community feels valued and included. Let this day serve as a reminder of our shared values and a call to action for a united and prosperous future.”

Reflecting on the values upheld by their forefathers, Biren Singh added, “Our ancestors valued the freedom and sovereignty of their homeland more than their own lives. It is now the responsibility of the present generation to embrace these values and stand together against any divisive forces in the state. I join the people of Manipur in paying homage to our fallen heroes,” his message concluded.
